Fatigue, energy and movement

One of the greatest challenges of motherhood for many mums is that the desire to exercise might be there, but we are too tired or time poor to get it happening. Now I'm a massive proponent of the philosophy that movement changes our brain function, but sometimes it's bloody hard to get our bodies moving, get that first movement session in and get the endorphin hit happening to make us want to give it another go.

When we're getting woken up a few times a night to feed the baby, our fatigue load is high. And then, if your kids are like mine, our day starts at around 5 am.

If this is a pattern that's familiar to you, then heading out for a 10-kilometre run or a massive bootcamp session could be a bit problematic. Research identifies a risk of injury if you exercise when you are fatigued. In an article by Sheila Dugan and Walter Frontera fatigue is classified as brain and muscular fatigue, and in the realms of the tired mother, brain fatigue definitely hits the spot. The article states that muscle injury, and in particular muscle strain, is linked to fatigue.

Being mindful of our fatigue is vital.

However, we also know that movement is really important to wake up our brain. To shift our energy, to get a bit of zing back in our day! As a new mum, when I was getting woken up six times per night, I always found if I could move my body during the day I would feel a million bucks compared to the days I didn't get to it. There's a great article by mind-body connection psychologist Kelly McGonigal in Berkeley's Greater Good Magazine called ‘Five surprising ways exercise changes your brain’. I'm going to share the concepts here because they are all sorts of amazing!
